Course Overview

By the end of this course, you will

  • demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the types of careers available to you as a graduating physics major.
  • have a complete skills inventory of both acquired and “aspirational” skills for your target market.
  • have developed at least one of your initial aspirational skills during the course of the semester.
  • be able to concisely convey specific and demonstrable skills uniquely associated with yourself or with physics students.
  • be able to provide one or more portfolio-based examples of your own problem-solving work that is directly relevant to your desired employment market.
  • be able to orally communicate in polished, professional manner, your abilities, strengths, career aspirations, and relevant experience.
  • have a written portfolio of work examples, self-assessments, reflections, and a polished resume.

Methods and Tools

We will use a variety of surveys, online resources, and writing prompts to provoke class discussion, reflection, and synthesis. We will spend class time doing the work – all you need to do outside of class is complete readings and some of the informational interviews I will assign throughout the course.
